Public Health France Barometer 2024

The Santé publique France Barometer is a recurring survey designed to measure and track the behaviors, opinions, and knowledge of the French population on various public health topics. For more than thirty years, this survey has provided essential data to shed light on public health issues, guide policy decisions, and enhance our understanding of the population’s health status.

In 2024, Santé publique France launched the 15th edition of the survey, conducted from February 12 to May 27, 2024, among a sample of people aged 18 to 79 living in mainland France, Guadeloupe, French Guiana, Martinique, or Réunion. In total, 34,940 people responded to the questionnaire online or by phone, representing a response rate of 56.6%.

This edition provides updated or previously unpublished data on a wide range of topics: perceived health status, alcohol and tobacco use, assessment of “Month Without Tobacco,” vaping, well-being, mental health (major depressive episode, suicidal behavior, generalized anxiety disorder), sedentary lifestyle, physical activity, sleep, vaccination uptake, antibiotic resistance, climate change, heatwave prevention, tick bites and Lyme disease, diabetes, high blood pressure, accidents, falls, head injuries, etc.

It marks the culmination of a major methodological overhaul initiated in 2022, aimed at ensuring the statistical quality of the results. The Santé publique France Barometer has thus been awarded the label of public interest and statistical quality by the label committee. The main methodological changes include:

  • a random selection of individuals invited to participate from demographic databases on housing and individuals (Fidéli, INSEE-DGFiP),

  • a sample designed to produce regional estimates,

  • a multimodal data collection protocol (internet and telephone),

  • multiple contact methods (invitations and follow-ups): postal mail, emails, and phone calls, including sending an invitation letter to all invited participants outlining the survey’s objectives, how to participate, and the mandatory nature of the survey.
