During the summer of 2026, several large-scale wildfires struck France. Santé publique France is reiterating its recommendations for minimizing the health effects of smoke and is providing local stakeholders with practical tools to inform and protect the public’s health. A monitoring system has also been established to track the health impacts of these wildfires on affected populations.

Smoke plumes and deteriorating air quality expose the population to increased health risks, particularly for vulnerable groups (children, the elderly, and those with respiratory or cardiovascular conditions).
Several health consequences related to these fires may be observed:
A monitoring system for the short-term health effects of these fires has been established by Santé publique France in Nouvelle-Aquitaine and Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur (PACA) around the area affected by the fire, based on data from local healthcare facilities. This system is based on the analysis of morbidity data routinely collected from emergency departments (the Oscour® network) and SOS Médecins associations.
Santé publique France, with support from the URPS Nouvelle-Aquitaine and the ARS Nouvelle-Aquitaine, is launching a survey of private general practitioners and pediatricians. The goal is to gather information from healthcare professionals on the health impacts and repercussions of the wildfires on their patients’ physical and mental health, in order to adapt the healthcare response in the coming weeks and better prepare for similar events in the future.
