Smoking: Current Use, Desire to Quit, and Quit Attempts. Santé publique France Health Barometer: Results of the 2024 Edition
In 2024, 24.0% of people aged 18 to 79 reported smoking tobacco, with 17.4% doing so daily. Smoking and daily smoking have declined significantly compared to 2021. Among people aged 18–75 in mainland France in 2024 (a population comparable to previous editions of the Santé publique France Health Barometer), 25% reported smoking (32% in 2021), and 18% reported smoking daily (25% in 2021). These declines are part of a trend that began in 2016. Social inequalities regarding smoking remain very pronounced: the proportion of daily smokers is significantly higher among the most disadvantaged populations; for example, it is 2.1 times higher among blue-collar workers than among white-collar workers (25.1% vs. 11.8%). Daily smoking is more common in three regions compared to the average of the other regions: Grand Est (19.8%), Occitanie (20.6%), and PACA (20.9%). More than half of daily smokers (55.0%) report wanting to quit smoking, and 17.3% report having made an attempt to quit for at least one week in the past 12 months.
