Climate
De fortes variations climatiques peuvent avoir des conséquences sanitaires et environnementales dramatiques. Les conséquences sur la santé peuvent être physiques ou psychologiques.
Santé publique France is committed to gaining a better understanding of the health impacts of meteorological and climatic factors, with the aim of supporting risk prevention and management. That is why we work closely with the program for preparedness and response to industrial and natural disasters, as well as with the air and health initiative.
The impact of climate is centered on several key areas:
Heat-related risks
Cold-related risks
The influence of climate change, adaptation, and mitigation policies on health
Risks related to flooding
Risks associated with extreme weather events related to public health
Risks associated with UV radiation
Risks associated with infectious diseases
A public health surveillance system
Santé publique France conducts health surveillance during heat waves or extreme cold spells using the Sursaud®syndromic surveillance system. We contribute to the evaluation and development of Météo-France’s meteorological surveillance system, as well as to updates to the National Heat Wave Plan (PNC). We conduct etiological studies to quantify the impact of temperature on mortality. We also carry out surveys to assess the knowledge, challenges, and measures taken by the public and by institutional and field-level stakeholders to mitigate the impacts of heat.
A system for preventing heat waves and cold waves
Santé publique France helps predict the current and future impacts of climate change to guide prevention efforts and assess the health benefits of adaptation measures and mitigation policies. To this end, this initiative collaborates with teams of French and international researchers.
As part of this effort, we are implementing a system to prevent heat waves and extreme cold waves (leaflets, posters, TV and radio spots, and communications on its website).
Climate change
thematic dossier
Climate change is rapidly and profoundly altering the environment. The health impacts of climate change are numerous and varied.
Extreme cold
thematic dossier
Cold weather increases the risk of cardiovascular and respiratory conditions and can lead to hospitalizations and death. This impact is observed within 3 to 21 days of exposure to the cold.
Extreme heat, heat wave
thematic dossier
Heat waves can have a significant impact on health. It is therefore essential to take proper precautions. Certain measures must be put in place, especially for those most at risk.
UV
thematic dossier
Ultraviolet radiation, which is everywhere, is emitted naturally by the sun or by artificial sources. It is responsible for various health conditions, including certain types of skin cancer.
