Public Health France Health Barometer: Results of the 2024 Edition

For more than thirty years, the Santé publique France Barometer has been an indispensable tool for understanding the behaviors, perceptions, and health determinants of people living in France. With more than 35,000 respondents, this survey complements existing surveillance systems by collecting data on vaccination rates, tobacco and alcohol use, suicidal thoughts, perceived health, and more. This data guides our prevention policies and helps us reduce inequalities. The 2024 edition takes a new step forward by incorporating new modules on food insecurity and discrimination, thereby strengthening our ability to measure the impact of social determinants—age, gender, migrant background, education, employment, and financial resources—on health. The data highlights alarming and all too often invisible situations: nearly a quarter of 18- to 29-year-olds report having experienced discrimination in the past five years, while 15% of adults in precarious financial situations have gone hungry. Women remain more affected by anxiety and depression, while young adults face multiple vulnerability factors. Yet these inequalities are not inevitable. The fight against smoking, for example, has reduced the number of smokers by 4 million over the past ten years. This proves that targeted policies and prevention efforts based on solid data work. In the face of demographic and climate challenges, Santé publique France is taking action at every level: personalized digital tools, awareness campaigns, and partnerships with local authorities. Our goal is clear: to make environments more conducive to health, for everyone and everywhere. And the regional data produced by this Barometer is a valuable tool for tailoring responses to the specific needs of local areas. Prevention is an essential tool for preserving our healthcare system, and it is urgent that we strengthen prevention efforts. And we know that investing in prevention pays off: every euro invested in the “Month Without Tobacco” campaign saves 7 euros in healthcare costs. These findings will inform policymakers, healthcare professionals, and every citizen. Health is also built day by day, through individual choices and in conjunction with public initiatives.
