Why this seminar?

"Developing psychosocial skills in children and youth: a framework to promote nationwide implementation"

Programs that have proven effective in preventing various health issues are based on the development of psychosocial skills (cognitive, emotional, and social). These skills help foster health-promoting behaviors and attitudes and contribute to the development of coping skills, self-esteem, self-confidence, anxiety management, and decision-making. Children and young people thus gain a greater ability to make informed and reasoned choices and develop skills for “living together.” These are life skills that children must be able to develop gradually from a young age—in school, within the family, and through interaction with their environment—so that they can internalize them and apply them in their future social and professional lives.

Psychosocial skills are at the heart of health promotion and effective prevention programs; they have a positive impact on well-being, mental health, substance use, sexual health, and educational success. It is within this framework that Santé publique France is organizing a seminar in partnership with the steering committee of the national strategy to strengthen the psychosocial skills of children and youth. It is aimed at public policymakers, health professionals in the social sector, educators working with children and youth, local stakeholders, researchers, and family representatives.

Rapidly Expanding Development Programs in France

Already widely implemented in some countries, PSD programs have been rapidly expanding in France in recent years, driven by, among others, Santé publique France, regional health agencies, the ministries of health, national education, agricultural education, and higher education, local authorities, and the judicial youth protection system. There is a proliferation of initiatives and pilot projects. The approaches are diverse and vary depending on the children’s age, the objectives, the professionals involved, and the context and environment in which they take place. They require careful attention and vigilance if we wish to ensure quality, effectiveness, sustainability, and consistency. It is important to carefully consider the logic of intervention over the long term, from the earliest ages through to the end of the school journey. This is a major challenge that concerns all stakeholders, both institutional and from civil society.

What is the purpose of this seminar?

This seminar will provide an opportunity to take stock of current knowledge on psychosocial skills and to review the historical context of the situation in France. It also aims to present the work on a framework for psychosocial skills, scheduled for publication in late 2021, which will enable the launch of a second phase—planned for 2022–2023—aimed at producing practical resources to facilitate nationwide implementation.

The floor will be given to practitioners and scientists to exchange and share scientific knowledge and experiences accumulated over the past few years.
