Social and emotional skills in and out of school
Building on its field experience since the late 2000s, IREPS Auvergne Rhône-Alpes is now rolling out, with financial support from the Auvergne Rhône-Alpes Regional Health Agency (ARS), a regional program to develop the psychosocial skills of children and young people aged 0 to 25. The uniqueness of this program lies in its territorial approach—"both in and out of school"—which is heavily inspired by the levers of action in health promotion. Indeed, we now know, thanks to data from the literature and the experience of field practitioners, that the effectiveness of psychosocial skills development programs depends not only on formal activities for children, but also on the role models provided by practitioners, the engagement of stakeholders, educational consistency across children’s various living environments, a positive and supportive atmosphere, and so on. IREPS ARA is therefore committed to supporting educational communities (elected officials, professionals, volunteers, and families) in their local areas (neighborhoods, municipalities, inter-municipal communities, and living areas). It supports them in adapting interventions to their specific contexts, capabilities, and constraints in order to develop and sustain long-term projects that impact both the individual skills of children and youth and the environments in which they grow up. This regional program currently supports 30 territories, some since 2019, each in a unique way. What they have in common is bringing together the various educational stakeholders who support children and youth around a shared goal of developing psychosocial skills. They draw on the diversity of each stakeholder’s mission to address health determinants at different levels, from the most individual to the most global. The diversity of these experiences is shared and capitalized upon during regional meetings.
