Characteristics of Effective Psychosocial Interventions

Evidence-based CPS programs emerged in Anglo-Saxon countries in the 1970s. Today, they still take the form of one or more cycles of psychoeducational group workshops. These pragmatic, structured, and experiential interventions enable participants to explore and strengthen their own social, cognitive, and emotional skills through role-playing exercises and practical activities. The term “evidence-based program” can refer to two distinct concepts that it is important to distinguish. In the first instance, an evidence-based program is synonymous with a validated program and refers to a program whose effectiveness has been demonstrated through scientific evaluation. In the second case, it refers to an intervention designed according to the evidence-based paradigm and refers to an intervention grounded in the best available scientific and experiential knowledge. Thus, in practice, two types of evidence-based CPS interventions can be implemented: the implementation of a “turnkey” evidence-based CPS program that has already been validated; and the development of a new evidence-based CPS intervention, adapted to the implementation context, and utilizing three sources of knowledge (scientific, experiential knowledge from professionals, and experiential knowledge from the public). In recent years, several scientific studies have examined the effectiveness criteria and common factors of evidence-based CPS programs. These studies have identified eight criteria associated with the effectiveness of CPS interventions. Five criteria pertain to the CPS intervention itself: 1/ a structured SAFE intervention (Sequenced, with Active pedagogy, Focused on key CPS, and Explicit teaching of CPS), 2/ evidence-based content, 3/ intensive workshops that are sustained over time, 4/ workshops that rely on formal materials, 5/ positive and experiential pedagogy. Three criteria relate to the implementation and environment of the CPS intervention: 6/ high-quality implementation, 7/ informal CPS practices implemented on a daily basis, 8/ a supportive educational environment.
