Building psychosocial skills in an elementary school
In 2016, our State Education Inspector distributed an IREPS44 flyer to all school principals in our district. In 2017–2018, the entire teaching staff joined the project, which involved training in the development of psychosocial skills. We applied for and were selected for the "EN SANTE A L'ECOLE" program, which no longer exists today. Three years of implementation across all school grades revealed positive effects for students in terms of empathy, communication, conflict resolution, identifying resources, and emotional awareness. This commitment by the teaching staff fostered cohesion and consistency. Working on these skills also creates a positive atmosphere for the adults! Even with training, working with students who have behavioral challenges can be difficult for teachers. A practice analysis conducted with an IREPS trainer was very beneficial to us. Developing an approach aimed at strengthening psychosocial skills is also useful in daily life and during times of tension for school administrators. The renewal of the teaching staff calls for creating a new dynamic around these learning processes. It would require access to training that is robust and highly enriching for all participants. The benefits of such learning are multiplied when the various stakeholders involved with the child are made aware of it. And this is a strength of our community, as an initial group of parent volunteers has been formed, followed by the coordinator of the town’s Teen Center and some volunteers from the local middle school. The town hall values the efforts of the various committed partners. And a new group of parents is expected to participate in the awareness-raising program offered by IREPS.
