Social and Emotional Learning in Teacher Education: Mapping the Curriculum

This presentation summarizes the results of the first phase of a study conducted by UNIRéS, the network of universities for health education, in collaboration with Santé Publique France. Drawing on input from UNIRéS network coordinators, this study provides an overview of the initial training of future teachers with regard to health, education, and health promotion. Through a semantic keyword analysis of 904 curriculum outlines for the first and second years of the MEEF Master’s program across all specializations, and by distributing a questionnaire to UNIRéS network coordinators and instructors at INSPEs, we sought to identify the presence of instruction related to psychosocial skills and health promotion in the initial training of teachers in France. The results appear to indicate a limited formal presence of these topics, which appear very rarely in the titles of teaching units (UE) and teaching modules (EC). When they are present, they seem linked to the disciplinary knowledge of certain specific programs (SVT, STMS, SMSSE, etc.). However, according to some instructors, they are still addressed. A second phase of this study is currently underway. It will explore the new training models being implemented starting in the 2021 academic year and establish a comparison with the models in place prior to the reform. The use of semi-structured interviews will also help to further analyze the current findings.
