Social-emotional skills, health, well-being, and academic success
Programs for developing psychosocial skills (PSS) have been the subject of extensive research and are now recommended by the World Health Organization as a means of promoting mental health and overall well-being. Furthermore, research reviews have highlighted the beneficial effects of developing these skills on academic success and, subsequently, on professional success. In this presentation, we will discuss the effects of different types of social-emotional skills development programs on these three dimensions: mental health, well-being, and academic success. More specifically, we will first explore the effects of targeted programs (i.e., programs that specifically address a single social-emotional skill over one or more sessions), then we will present the effects of programs aimed at developing psychosocial skills in a cross-cutting manner (i.e., programs that influence psychological and cognitive processes such as de-centering, thereby promoting the development of multiple psychosocial skills simultaneously), such as programs based on mindfulness or positive psychology practices. The mechanisms underlying the effects of this type of program will also be explained.
