CPS Development Program for Schoolchildren Ages 6 to 11: “The Journey of the TOIMOINOUS: Growing Up and Living Together”

The CPS development program "The Journey of the TOIMOINOUS: Growing Up and Living Together" has been implemented for children ages 6 to 11 in elementary schools and recreation centers located in our priority areas: the Local Health Contracts and City Contracts of the three departments of the former Limousin region since 2016. Then in Gironde under the Bordeaux Métropole Local Health Contract since 2018. In line with the concept of a health-promoting environment, the goal is to implement this program within a single site for several consecutive years, in order to benefit as many individuals as possible; both staff and children, from these specific sessions, which have a positive influence on interactions and contribute to improving “community life.” As for schools, the program takes place during after-school hours or during school hours, or both. This project is the result of a close partnership between the Nouvelle-Aquitaine Regional Health Agency (ARS), the French Ministry of Education, and the relevant local authorities over the past six years. A consortium of local organizations in education and health promotion (ADDICTIONS FRANCE, ENTRAIDSIDA, IREPS, MUTUALITE FRANCAISE, ...) has been tasked with organizing negotiation meetings with regional partners; training future facilitators; providing methodological support to adapt sessions to team structures; offering co-facilitation services if needed; and assisting with the overall evaluation of the project. Once trained, after-school program leaders and volunteer teachers offer children a program consisting of at least seven 90-minute sessions focused on building personal skills. Through fun and educational activities, children learn to identify several of their cognitive, emotional, and interpersonal skills. An Interventional Study, currently being conducted by a team of research psychologists, aims to scientifically validate the content of this CPS program—which was co-developed by all partners—and then assess the impact of the sessions on changes in children’s behavior, with the ultimate goal of having the program recognized as “evidence-based.”
