What We Do
Epidemiological Surveillance of Parkinson's Disease
Santé publique France conducts epidemiological surveillance of Parkinson’s disease in France (prevalence, incidence, temporal trends, geographic distribution) using data on drug reimbursements. This surveillance provides information on the number of people living with the disease, the number of new cases each year, and allows for their characterization by sex, age, and geographic distribution across France.
We also focus on Parkinson’s disease in specific populations. For instance, in collaboration with Inserm Unit 1018, we conducted a study on the incidence of Parkinson’s disease among members of the Mutualité Sociale Agricole (MSA) and a study on the association between Parkinson’s disease and agricultural activities.
Finally, using hospitalization data (frequency and reasons) and causes of death, we describe the long-term outcomes for people with this disease in terms of mortality and morbidity.

Making data available to support research and prevention
Physical activity and specialized rehabilitation are associated with a more favorable disease progression, with a lower risk of complications and reduced treatment costs. Some studies also suggest that physical activity may offer benefits for the prevention of the disease.
In addition to informing public authorities about the burden of this disease in France, our goal is to make the data generated through epidemiological surveillance available to researchers to help identify risk factors and protective factors for Parkinson’s disease, as well as avenues for prevention.
Mutualité Sociale Agricole (MSA): An organization providing social security coverage for the entire agricultural population and their dependents, including after retirement: farmers, employees (of farms, companies, cooperatives, and professional agricultural organizations).
Inserm (National Institute of Health and Medical Research): A public scientific and technological institution under the joint supervision of the Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Research. It is dedicated to biological, medical, and human health research. It operates across the entire spectrum, from the research laboratory to the patient’s bedside.
