Résistance aux antibiotiques

Antibiotic resistance

Antibiotic resistance renders one or more antibiotics ineffective against a bacterial infection. This phenomenon can make it difficult, or even impossible, to treat certain infections.

Our missions

  • Monitoring the epidemiological trends of antibiotic-resistant bacteria

  • Issuing alerts in response to any unusual or concerning situation

  • Enabling the adaptation of preventive measures

  • Informing the general public

What We Do

Santé publique France’s efforts to combat and prevent antibiotic resistance are guided by national objectives outlined in:

Santé publique France leads epidemiological surveillance and the prevention of antibiotic resistance in France and participates in European surveillance through various initiatives aimed at preserving the effectiveness of antibiotics.
To this end, Santé publique France carries out various actions across the three healthcare sectors (healthcare facilities, medical-social facilities, and community care):

  • Epidemiological surveillance of antibiotic resistance through:

    • Coordinating national missions delegated to the Centers for Support in the Prevention of Healthcare-Associated Infections (CPias),

    • Leading a national working group on indicators for monitoring antibiotic resistance,

    • Monitoring of outpatient antibiotic use using data from the National Health Data System (SNDS),

    • Conducting national prevalence surveys of healthcare-associated/nosocomial infections every 5 years,

  • Managing reports of healthcare-associated infections, including reports of emerging highly resistant bacteria (BHRe) in collaboration with the CPias and the National Reference Center (CNR) for Antibiotic Resistance;

  • Prevention of antibiotic resistance, including communication on the subject accessible to the widest possible audience.

Today, the resources implemented under the auspices of Santé publique France have equipped France with the capacity to rapidly detect the emergence of new forms of resistance, and to monitor and control an outbreak.

National surveillance networks

In 2018, five national missions were established by a committee of experts and completed their terms in 2023.

Prevalence surveys

Prevalence surveys provide data on hospital-acquired infections caused by antibiotic-resistant bacteria and on patients currently receiving antibiotic treatment. They are conducted every five years...

Participation in international monitoring networks

France’s contribution, through Santé publique France and its partners, to European surveillance of antibiotic resistance in human health underscores its commitment to combating antibiotic resistance...

Other stakeholders in surveillance

To carry out its infectious disease surveillance activities, Santé publique France relies on a network of partners in human and animal health.

An alert system: external reporting of healthcare-associated infections

The system for reporting healthcare-associated infections, established in 2001, has been based on the e-Sin digital tool since 2012.

Specific studies

Santé publique France has conducted or collaborated on several French and European studies that supplement routine surveillance efforts to estimate the impact of antibiotic resistance (including...

Prevention and communication initiatives

Santé publique France is implementing measures to prevent antibiotic resistance.
