Flu

The flu is a contagious viral respiratory infection that causes seasonal outbreaks every winter. The flu vaccine is the most effective way to protect yourself.

Our missions

  • Monitor the epidemiological status of influenza and assess its impact on public health

  • Promote vaccination and preventive measures against influenza

  • Informing healthcare professionals and the general public

What We Do

Santé publique France monitors the epidemiological status of influenza and promotes vaccination and preventive measures against the flu.

The annual influenza epidemic is widespread, resulting in a significant number of deaths, particularly among the most vulnerable populations. Indeed, its high contagiousness and vaccination coverage that falls well short of the required target make it a major public health challenge. In this context, Santé publique France’s mission focuses on two main areas:

  • monitoring the epidemiological status of the flu and assessing its impact on public health

  • promoting vaccination and preventive measures against the flu, particularly during epidemic periods

The influenza surveillance system

Epidemiological surveillance of influenza

Santé publique France coordinates influenza surveillance, which begins in October (week 40) and ends in mid-April of the following year (week 15) in mainland France.

Flu prevention measures

Santé publique France is implementing flu prevention measures through various resources designed for the general public and healthcare professionals.
