Bronchiolitis Surveillance in Nouvelle-Aquitaine. Update as of December 1, 2021.

Key Points

In Nouvelle-Aquitaine: hospital indicators continue to rise, marked by a sharp increase in the proportion of hospitalizations for bronchiolitis among children under 2 years of age.

The bronchiolitis outbreak, which began early in week 41 (October 11–17, 2021), has been ongoing for 7 weeks in the region. Following a decline linked to school holidays, a new increase in emergency department visits and hospitalizations for bronchiolitis has been observed for the second consecutive week.

In week 47 of 2021 (November 22–28, 2021)*:

  • 339 emergency department visits were recorded, representing 18.3% of activity among children under 2 years of age (compared to 14.1% in week 46), of which 147 were followed by hospitalization, representing 43.4% of bronchiolitis cases;

  • The proportion of bronchiolitis cases among hospitalizations for children under 2 years of age is rising sharply (38.1% in week 47 compared to 31.3% in week 46); nearly 95% of hospitalizations for bronchiolitis involve children under 1 year of age;

  • RSV circulation remains active across the country.
