Chikungunya, Dengue, and Zika - Data from Enhanced Surveillance in Metropolitan France in 2022

From May 1 to November 30 each year, Santé publique France coordinates enhanced seasonal surveillance of chikungunya, dengue, and Zika in mainland France, in collaboration with the relevant Regional Health Agencies (ARS) (see surveillance system and partners).

Imported cases of chikungunya, dengue, and Zika in mainland France

From May 1 to December 9, 2022, the following were identified in mainland France:

  • 272 imported cases of dengue; 255 were diagnosed in departments with documented presence of Aedes albopictus

  • 22 imported cases of chikungunya

  • 3 imported cases of Zika

Santé publique France reports an increase in the number of dengue cases in Guadeloupe observed since late November, as well as recent and ongoing circulation of the Zika virus in Thailand. In fact, the surveillance system has retrospectively identified a case of Zika with fetal complications contracted in Thailand in late 2021. The international travel medicine network, Geosentinel, has also identified five cases of Zika in Europe and Israel contracted by travelers in Thailand between March 16 and June 2. As a reminder, Zika is potentially present throughout the intertropical zone.

  • Learn more: epidemiological update for the PACA region and press release from the PACA Regional Health Agency

In the Corsica region:

  • An outbreak involving two locally acquired cases whose symptoms began in mid-September (read the press release).

For each identified case or outbreak, epidemiological investigations have been conducted or are underway to identify any other potential cases and precisely define the transmission area. Healthcare professionals in the affected areas have been trained to recognize and report any other potential cases of dengue. Entomological surveys and mosquito control measures have been carried out or are currently underway by the mosquito control operator.
