Methods for Selecting PMSI Data for the Analysis of Trauma Victims: Burns and Traumatic Brain Injuries
Problem Statement: Data from the Medical Information Systems Program in medicine, surgery, obstetrics, and dentistry can be adapted, in certain cases and under certain conditions, to account for hospitalizations due to trauma. Two areas were explored: burn victims and victims of traumatic brain injury. Method: An algorithm for selecting data from the Medical Information Systems Program was established and has been in use for several years to study burn victims. The methods for selecting hospital stays for traumatic brain injuries, which are the subject of a more recent exploration, are described. Results: Routine production of results on hospitalizations for burns. Results on hospitalizations for traumatic brain injuries are forthcoming. Conclusion: In both cases, the insights derived from these analyses of the Medical Information Systems Program contribute to epidemiological surveillance and prevention, and are useful for the organization of care.
