Esteban
A study on environmental health, biomonitoring, physical activity, and nutrition
A major national study for the health of future generations
Esteban is a new national public health study. Its primary objectives include measuring our exposure to certain environmental substances, gaining a better understanding of our diet and physical activity, and assessing the prevalence of certain chronic diseases in the population.
Designed to be repeated approximately every 7 years, Esteban will enable the long-term collection of valuable data to develop a more comprehensive view of health, integrating environment, diet, nutrition, physical activity, and chronic diseases.
Understanding and Reducing Our Exposure to Environmental Substances
In our immediate environment, many substances can have harmful effects on health.
Esteban measures our exposure to potentially harmful substances (pesticides, bisphenol A, phthalates, etc.), as well as their sources, particularly in food.
These measurements will then enable us to make policy and health decisions to protect our health and that of future generations.
Diet and physical activity
Diet, physical activity, and body weight play a decisive role in the onset or prevention of certain chronic diseases.
Esteban studies our dietary habits and consumption patterns, as well as our level of physical activity, to supplement the data already collected during the National Nutrition and Health Survey (ENNS) conducted by Santé publique France in 2006 and 2007.
This essential assessment will provide scientists and public authorities with new tools to implement prevention programs.
Chronic Diseases
Asthma, allergies, diabetes, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), high blood pressure, high cholesterol... A portion of our population suffers from these diseases or risk factors without knowing it, due to a lack of diagnosis.
Esteban measures the exact prevalence of these conditions in our population: a key factor for guiding public health initiatives.
Alert if necessary
Conducted approximately every 7 years, Esteban will enable us to track the long-term trends of numerous health indicators and identify certain emerging trends.
The Esteban study aims to address the following primary scientific objectives:
Estimate the levels of exposure among the population living in metropolitan France (ages 6–74) to environmental substances with a presumed and/or observed impact on health and establish reference values
Describe dietary intake, physical activity, sedentary behavior, and the nutritional status of the population living in France
Estimate the prevalence of chronic diseases (diabetes, chronic kidney disease, COPD, asthma) and vascular risk factors (hypertension, dyslipidemia) and their undiagnosed proportion among adults
Estimate the prevalence of asthma, atopy, and allergic diseases among children
Secondary objectives:
Analyze the determinants of environmental exposure, chronic diseases, and dietary behaviors
Monitor changes in indicators previously collected during the 2006–2007 ENNS study and begin monitoring other areas
Compare with data from surveys conducted abroad
Provide the indicators necessary for defining and understanding the monitoring of public health policies (Public Health Act, National Nutrition and Health Program (PNNS), Obesity Plan, Chemical Management Plans, etc.)
Alert health authorities in the event of emerging trends
