Health Monitoring in Normandy. Update as of December 13, 2023.
Key points
Bronchiolitis
The volume of activity and the number of visits to SOS Médecins were once again on the decline.
Hospital indicators (emergency departments) were also declining but remained at a high level.
The positivity rate for RSV tested in the lab was decreasing, while the rate for rhinovirus remained stable.
These findings suggest that the peak of the epidemic has passed, though this will need to be confirmed in the coming weeks.
COVID-19
Activity indicators for Covid-19 continued to rise in community settings (SOS Médecins) and in hospitals (emergency departments).
The number of positive laboratory test results was increasing.
The situation was marked by the co-circulation of different Omicron variants.
The BA.2.86 variant (including sublineages such as JN.1) has been the most commonly detected in the region since Week 47.
Pneumonia
Following an increase in cases of Mycoplasma pneumoniae respiratory infections in France (see national news), surveillance for pneumonia has been stepped up.
Indicators in hospitals (emergency departments) and in the community (SOS Médecins) had been rising for children under 15 for several weeks.
Levels were higher than those observed in the past two years.
Influenza
Increase in indicators in community practice (SOS Médecins) and in the number of influenza viruses isolated by hospital laboratories. These indicators remained at low levels.
Asthma
Emergency department activity was decreasing but remained at a high level, likely due to various outbreaks of acute respiratory infections (ARI).
In this context, and with the holiday gatherings of the end of the year approaching, it is important that at-risk individuals protect themselves by getting vaccinated against seasonal flu and COVID-19, and that everyone continues to follow preventive measures.
