Health Surveillance in French Guiana. Bulletin of May 30, 2025.
Key Points
Dengue
Over the past two weeks (W20 and W21), overall dengue activity in the territory was low, with an average of 10 confirmed cases per week. The majority of cases were reported in the Savanes sector, where the slight increase observed two weeks ago has not been confirmed. The serotype identified over the past two weeks was exclusively DENV-2.
Since the beginning of the year, 197 cases of dengue have been confirmed in French Guiana, averaging 9 cases per week. Of these, 104 were from the Savanes sector, 42 from the West Coast sector, 22 from Cayenne Island, and 8 from the Maroni sector; the location is unknown for the remaining 21 cases. Among the 127 samples serotyped, 98% were DENV-2 and 2% were DENV-3.
Malaria
The number of malaria cases diagnosed in the healthcare system during the last two weeks of May remained low, with 2 cases (1 case each in S20 and S21, vs. 6 in total in S18 and S19). Both of these cases were P. vivax; they were not relapses.
In total, 69 malaria cases have been recorded since the beginning of the year. Malaria activity declined between January and March (from 27 monthly cases to 4), rose slightly in April (16 cases), and declined again in May (8 cases). Since the beginning of the year, infections have mainly occurred in gold mining areas in the municipality of Kourou.
Acute Respiratory Infections
The seasonal flu epidemic was declared in S52-2024, with the peak occurring in February. A decline in indicators was then observed, except in local health centers and hospitals, where activity remained at a high level. Since early May, an upward trend has been observed and could mark the start of the second wave of influenza typically seen each year in French Guiana. Activity related to bronchiolitis in infants has also been on the rise in recent weeks.
Diarrhea
Activity has been on the rise in isolated communities (CDPS and local hospitals) and along the coast over the past two weeks.
