Public Health Surveillance in the Alsace Region. Epidemiological Update as of March 8, 2012.

Key Developments

  • The flu epidemic continues in Alsace. Flu-related activity reported by the SOS Médecin associations in Strasbourg and Mulhouse, which saw a significant increase in week 8, began to decline in week 9. The peak of the flu epidemic was likely reached in week 8 in Alsace; data from the coming weeks will confirm or refute this hypothesis.

  • The epidemic peak has been surpassed in mainland France

  • The A(H3N2) virus is predominant this season.

  • Nationally, an increase in mortality among people aged 85 and older has been observed since week 6, although it is not possible to determine whether this excess is attributable to the cold snap that occurred during the first two weeks of February and/or to the ongoing winter influenza epidemic.
