Raising Awareness of Indoor Air Quality in Franche-ComtéAction 14 of the Franche-Comté Regional Health and Environment Plan 2011-2015 (PRSE 2) aims to raise public awareness and inform the public about steps to take to improve indoor air quality (IAQ) in homes. To this end, an awareness-raising kit called "Air(e) de Jeux" was created jointly by the Regional Health Agency (ARS) and the Regional Health Education and Promotion Authority (IREPS), with the support of some twenty partners and service providers. The IREPS, which leads the initiative through a multi-year agreement with the ARS, offers participating organizations (local governments through local health contracts, schools starting at the middle school level, healthcare professionals, social workers, prevention associations, etc.) either direct outreach activities with their respective audiences or training on how to use the toolkit.Whether working with individuals or groups, the facilitator can, depending on the audience and the allotted time, offer one or more of the items included in the kit:
a general quiz on indoor air quality,
a test on behavior regarding one’s home,
a spot-the-difference game, in which participants must identify seven elements in four rooms of the house that could harm indoor air quality,
a card game in which the winner is the player who achieves 100% ventilation while avoiding the traps set by the other players,
a board game featuring different rooms in a home that need to be decontaminated,
a short film featuring a family in their home with a scientist commenting on their actions and habits,
a guide from the National Institute for Prevention and Health Education on indoor air pollution and a poster.
Finally, four roll-up banners were created to accompany and promote the kit at special events: forums, awareness campaigns, model apartments… The core message of the materials is based on three prevention strategies:
limiting sources of pollution,
maintaining ventilation systems,
ventilate for at least 10 minutes a day, summer and winter.
