Growing Up with Screens [Introduction to the Feature]
The ubiquity of screens during children’s and young people’s leisure time has now been confirmed by numerous scientific studies. This special report from *La Santé en action* sheds light on this issue, with the exception of the use of artificial intelligence and connected devices. It first provides an overview of current digital behaviors, then highlights the ambivalence of these uses: some expose minors to health risks, while others can contribute to learning, creativity, and socialization among children and adolescents. A series of articles then presents initiatives aimed at raising awareness of the issue and even encouraging changes in screen-use behavior. These initiatives are intended for children and their parents, as well as for professionals who work with families, across various settings. They include actions taken by public authorities, particularly in the regulatory sphere. This issue also highlights the voices of children and young people—for example, regarding their needs—as they acknowledge spending too much time in front of screens. The illustrations for this feature were created by elementary, middle, and high school students who participated in the poster contest “Screens and You… How’s It Going?” in honor of Safer Internet Day 2026.
