Venous thromboembolism

Venous thromboembolism involves the formation of a blood clot that can block blood flow and, in some cases, travel to the lungs and cause a pulmonary embolism.

Our Mission

  • Monitoring the epidemiological trends of venous thromboembolic diseases

  • Enable the adaptation of preventive measures

  • Informing healthcare professionals

What We Do

Venous thromboembolism: our response

Venous thromboembolic disease is associated with high morbidity and mortality. It is therefore important to prevent risks by addressing the relevant health determinants. Santé publique France is therefore tasked with monitoring its epidemiology and preventing the risks of venous thromboembolic disease.

Epidemiological surveillance of venous thromboembolic disease

Santé publique France has established a surveillance program for venous thromboembolic disease based on:

  • Medical-administrative databases consolidated within the National Health Data System (SNDS), particularly hospitalization data from the PMSI

  • Medical causes of death from the Center for Epidemiology on Medical Causes of Death (CépiDc) of the National Institute of Health and Medical Research (Inserm)

Preventive measures against venous thromboembolic diseases

As part of its prevention mission, Santé Publique France provides information and recommends appropriate preventive measures, such as lifestyle and dietary changes and physical activity, to reduce the risk of venous thromboembolic disease.

  • Information for the general public

Santé publique France provides the general public with a website outlining the lifestyle and dietary guidelines to follow to prevent the risk of venous thromboembolic disease. This site promotes a varied and balanced diet, regular physical activity, and reducing sedentary behavior.

  • Information for healthcare professionals

Drawing on its surveillance program for venous thromboembolic disease, Santé publique France published an article in 2013 reporting epidemiological data collected in 2010 (hospitalizations and mortality) to inform healthcare professionals.
