Preparing for an influenza pandemic. Estimating the weekly number of hospital admissions and hospital days during an influenza pandemic
As part of the effort to combat influenza pandemics, we conducted an initial study to estimate the epidemiological impact that an influenza pandemic might have in terms of expected cases, hospitalizations, and deaths. The model used to perform these calculations is a static model. Consequently, all figures provided represent the expected values at the end of the pandemic. Furthermore, the model did not account for the impact of implementing control measures. Based on the results provided by this model, we attempted to estimate, using a few assumptions, the hospital burden in terms of the number of admissions and hospital days per week. (R.A.)
