Mental Health: What Are We Talking About?

Long limited to psychiatric disorders, the concept of mental health has broadened to now include everyone’s emotional, psychological, and social well-being. This comprehensive and inclusive approach—which in no way downplays the reality of mental disorders and their treatment—recognizes that everyone has mental health, shaped by individual, social, and environmental factors. The “dual continuum model” shows that it is possible to be doing well despite having a mental disorder, or to be struggling without having one. Consequently, promoting mental health involves all public policies—beyond the medical field alone—in order to improve everyone’s quality of life.
