Key Points

  • Since January 1, 2019, 1,070 cases of measles have been reported (compared to 2,244 cases during the same period in 2018), including 340 (32%) hospitalizations (14 in intensive care), 86 cases (8%) complicated by pneumonia, 2 cases of encephalitis, including 1 death (subacute encephalitis in an immunocompromised patient).

  • Measles virus circulation remains active throughout the country, with a resurgence in the number of cases in week 18, with 94 reported cases, compared to 70 cases (on average) during the previous 8 weeks, primarily linked to the outbreak in the Pyrénées-Atlantiques region.

  • 88% of cases occurred in unvaccinated or inadequately vaccinated individuals (out of a total of 753 cases, aged over one year and born since 1980, for whom vaccination status was known).

  • 77 departments reported at least 1 case during the period.
