Influenza Surveillance in Réunion. Epidemiological Update as of August 12, 2014.
Epidemiological Situation
The seasonal influenza epidemic, which began in week 22 (May 26–June 1, 2014) and peaked in week 27, ended during week 30 (July 21–27, 2014). Since then, the monitored indicators have returned to seasonal average levels. This epidemic was more severe than in the previous four years, with virus B being the predominant strain and a significant number of severe cases requiring intensive care. However, based on surveillance data from previous years, a new surge could occur at the end of the southern winter following the start of the school year. The situation will be closely monitored.
