Health Surveillance in Réunion. Bulletin of May 9, 2025.

Key Points

Chikungunya

  • Surveillance indicators for emergency department and outpatient activity began to decline. This trend is expected to be confirmed in the coming weeks due to a public holiday (May 1) and the start of school vacations. Nevertheless, the epidemic remains active, with variations across regions.

Leptospirosis

  • A seasonal resurgence is currently underway. For healthcare professionals, it is important to consider and confirm this differential diagnosis in the context of a chikungunya epidemic, where the use of confirmatory laboratory tests is no longer routine. Leptospirosis must be treated promptly (antibiotic therapy under medical supervision) to limit the risk of severe forms of the disease or even death.

Acute respiratory infection

  • Respiratory viruses are circulating at very low levels with no public health impact.

Gastroenteritis

  • Surveillance indicators in community practice and hospitals (all ages combined) remain at a low level with a very limited public health impact.
