Epidemiological surveillance of leptospirosis in Réunion. Update as of April 23, 2012.
Reunion Island has conditions that increase the risk of contracting leptospirosis. Indeed, the numerous animal reservoirs and the tropical climate, which favors the survival of the bacteria in the environment, combine with human lifestyles and activities to increase exposure to the bacteria. Consequently, a surge in cases is observed each year during the southern summer—a hot and humid season—particularly in the eastern and southern regions of the island, which receive the most rainfall.
