COVID-19: Epidemiological Update for Nouvelle-Aquitaine as of May 14, 2020

Estimated number of confirmed COVID-19 cases*

  • From January 21 to May 11, 2020, 4,868 cases of COVID-19 were confirmed in Nouvelle-Aquitaine (+101 cases since May 4; 140,227 cases in France)

Monitoring of hospital and private laboratories

  • The proportion of positive tests for SARS-CoV-2 is declining in hospital laboratories and stable in private laboratories

  • The departments of Vienne, Haute-Vienne, Corrèze, Creuse, and Gironde have the highest incidence rates

Community-based surveillance

  • SOS Médecins: activity remains stable but low, with 251 cases for suspected COVID-19 in S19-2020, representing 4% of total activity (258 cases, or 4%, in S18)

  • Community laboratories (3 labs): 1% of tests positive in Week 19 of 2020 (1% in Week 18 of 2020), compared to 3% in France

Surveillance in long-term care facilities, including nursing homes

  • 1,749 cases among residents as of May 11, 2020, including 778 confirmed cases (1,707 cases, including 762 confirmed, as of May 4, 2020)

  • 207 deaths as of May 11, 2020 (198 deaths as of May 4, 2020)

Surveillance in hospitals

  • Oscour® Network

    • Decrease in emergency department activity for COVID-19 in S19-2020, 347 visits for suspected COVID-19, representing 2% of total hospital emergency department activity (3% in S18-2020)

    • The hospitalization rate following visits for suspected COVID-19, an indicator of severity upon arrival at the emergency department, increased in Week 19 of 2020 (62% compared to 54% in Week 18), and remained stable among those aged 65 and older (80% in Week 19 of 2020 compared to 82% in Week 18 of 2020)

  • Hospital laboratories at the Bordeaux, Limoges, and Poitiers university hospitals: 1% of tests were positive in S19-2020 (2% in S18-2020)

  • Sentinel intensive care units: among the 276 severe cases recorded by this network’s units, the majority are men (73%), aged 65 and older (50%), and have at least one risk factor (78%); note that more than one-third of the cases in this network come from another region (n=92)

Mortality surveillance

  • As of May 12, 2020, 362 deaths with COVID-19 listed as a cause were reported by hospitals in Nouvelle-Aquitaine

  • Among the 420 deaths with COVID-19 mentioned in electronic death certificates, 63% had known comorbidities and 76% were aged 75 or older

  • No excess all-cause mortality was detected through week S18-2020 (April 27 to May 3, 2020) at the departmental and Nouvelle-Aquitaine regional levels
