COVID-19: Epidemiological Update for French Guiana as of November 4, 2021

Key Points

  • The decline in incidence continued at a rapid pace in Week 43 (-28%), bringing the incidence rate to 169 per 100,000 inhabitants. This decline is widespread across French Guiana.

  • The effective R stands at 0.73, stable compared to the previous week. The testing rate decreased slightly in Week 43 (-16%), and the positivity rate reached 7.7%, a decline of 1.2 percentage points over one week.

  • This decline is observed in the coastal sectors: Cayenne Island (-18%), Savanes (-29%), and Western Coast (-30%). The trend was also downward in the Oyapock and Maroni sectors.

  • A slight increase in hospitalizations was observed, with 54 admissions in Week 43 (+12%), though this represents a decline of nearly 30% compared to Weeks 40 and 41.

  • ICU admissions remain stable at 10 patients in Week 43 versus 11 in Week 42 (compared to 26 per week at the peak). The trend over the last 7 days is only 7 admissions. The number of deaths increased, with 10 deaths in Week 43. In total, 119 deaths were recorded during the fourth wave (over 12 weeks).

  • Vaccination coverage continues to increase slowly, reaching 33.8% for a full course and 39.1% for one dose among the eligible population aged 12 and older. An increase in “all-age” coverage for at least one dose was observed in week 43; this primarily concerns younger age groups, with a 0.75-point increase in one week among those aged 18 to 39.
