Epidemiological Situation of Gastroenteritis in Martinique. Update as of February 7, 2013.

Situation Analysis

The gastroenteritis outbreak that began in early December 2012 (week 49 of 2012) continues to spread in Martinique. The outbreak remains moderate in scale, with an estimated 11,500 suspected cases of gastroenteritis to date, based on data collected by the sentinel physician network. REMINDER: To limit the spread of the viruses causing this outbreak, it is essential to follow basic hygiene rules, particularly regular handwashing with soap. Parents are reminded that if their children (especially the youngest ones) exhibit symptoms of gastroenteritis (diarrhea, vomiting), they should consult their primary care physician to prevent dehydration, which can be severe in infants.
