Public Health Monitoring in French Guiana. Bulletin dated October 23, 2026.
Key Points
Malaria
- Over the past two weeks, the number of malaria cases remained low but was on the rise, with 8 cases reported (4 in S41 and 4 in S42, provisional data) compared to a total of 3 in S39 and S40. The 8 single-episode cases identified in S41 and S42 were caused by P. vivax. Since the beginning of the year, 166 cases of malaria have been reported (12 in August, 9 in September, and 8 in October).
- During the third quarter (July through September), the situation was generally calm with 30 cases reported; however, an outbreak was identified in the Upper Maroni region, on the border with Suriname, in an artisanal gold mining area (see full report on page 2). This outbreak remains active as of October 23, 2026, and underscores the importance of screening, patient follow-up, preventive measures, and vector control despite a relatively low overall number of cases.
Acute Respiratory Infections
- Flu-like illness: The increase in the number of visits for flu-like illness to the emergency departments at the three sites of the French Guiana University Hospital (CHU de Guyane) has not been confirmed over the past two weeks. Activity related to this condition was once again low throughout the territory.
- Bronchiolitis: Activity related to bronchiolitis was low in primary care centers (CDPS) and remained stable at a moderate level in the emergency departments at the three sites of the French Guiana University Hospital (CHU de Guyane).
- COVID-19: Activity related to SARS-CoV-2 was low in French Guiana over the past two weeks.
Diarrhea
- Activity related to diarrhea was moderate and declining in the CDPS and in the emergency departments at the three sites of the French Guiana University Hospital (CHU de Guyane).
