The purpose of this article is to highlight recent trends in AIDS between January 1998 and June 2000: a marked slowdown in the decline of new AIDS cases and deaths, the predominance of transmission through heterosexual contact, and the growing proportion of foreign nationals among AIDS cases; and to describe the characteristics of AIDS cases among young adults.
