The Good Behavior Game (GBG) Program

GBG is a classroom behavior management strategy for elementary schools designed to improve the school climate. Through GBG, teachers integrate the development of social-emotional skills into the instructional strategies they use to teach academic subjects. The program includes sessions held several times a week while students work on their regular lessons. GBG is based on four key elements: classroom rules, team membership, active behavior observation, and positive reinforcement. Each key element involves a series of professional practices for the teacher that ensure the expected benefits and are described in a set of quality criteria. The implementation of GBG primarily involves entire teaching teams as part of a school-wide initiative. Between 2015 and 2017, the GRVS team benefited from a skills transfer from the American Institutes for Research (AIR), which is leading the program’s international rollout as part of a pilot study conducted in partnership with the Departmental Directorate of National Education in the Alpes-Maritimes (DSDEN06). The skills transfer from AIR enabled the GRVS to acquire the skills needed not only to implement the program but also to lead a national rollout. Since 2018, the GRVS has continued the rollout in the Alpes-Maritimes and has initiated skills transfers to partners working with the Ministry of National Education in their regions: CODES 83 (Var department), APLEAT (Loiret department), and Addictions France (Grand-Est, Normandy, and Île-de-
