The assessment of environmental exposure due to living near sites with potential asbestos exposure (SPEA) must be based on historical mapping of these sites. To this end, a georeferenced SPEA database was created using a geographic information system (GIS) and by cross-referencing multiple data sources. This database now makes it possible to: 1) calculate the distance between the residences of mesothelioma patients and these sites, and 2) generate ecological indicators at a fine geographic scale, such as the density of exposure sites within a given area. Thus, the SPEA database, made available to research teams, along with the calculable geographic exposure indicators, can be used for future epidemiological studies by leveraging data from the National Mesothelioma Surveillance Program (PNSM), for example.
