Musculoskeletal disorders

Musculoskeletal disorders primarily manifest as pain and functional impairment of varying severity, often occurring on a daily basis and caused or exacerbated by work

Our missions

  • Monitoring trends in musculoskeletal disorders

  • Monitoring changes in occupational exposure to MSD risk factors to enable the adaptation of preventive measures

  • Promote our findings and support their implementation by decision-makers and stakeholders

Data

The musculoskeletal disorder monitoring system makes it possible to track the progression of these conditions, which are very common in the workplace.

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome and Low Back Pain

Two very common MSDs have been specifically studied by Santé publique France: carpal tunnel syndrome and low back pain. Incidence data (broken down by region and department, and by year), along with the proportion of surgical cases for these MSDs attributable to occupational activity—used as indicators of these conditions—are presented here.

The results of studies on other MSDs, occupational exposures, the use of data to identify prevention priorities, job retention (duration of work absences), or the underreporting of these conditions are available via the “Publications” tab.

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

Access incidence data for the general population and the proportions of risk attributable to occupations and economic sectors

Lower Back Pain and Herniated Disc

Access incidence data for the general population regarding surgical cases of lumbar disc herniation, disc herniation at all locations, and the proportion of risk attributable to work
