Tobacco use indicators.

There are two sources of data on tobacco consumption in France: sales data and survey data. This information has been compiled recently. Sales data provide only an estimate of total consumption, not by gender or age. Surveys also allow for an estimate of total tobacco consumption; however, this estimate generally differs significantly from that provided by sales data. The authors propose adjusting the survey data to make it consistent with the sales data. Once this adjustment is made, the survey data—which is available by gender and age—allows for the breakdown of sales by gender and age. The authors review all the issues that these data present.
