Factors associated with the desire to quit smoking and quit attempts among smokers. Results from the 2021 Santé publique France Health Barometer

Introduction – Smoking prevalence has generally declined in France since 2016, but social inequalities appear to have widened again since 2020. The aim of this article is to present certain factors associated with the desire to quit smoking, plans to quit within the next 6 months, and having made an attempt to quit in the past year. Methods – This study is based on data from the 2021 Santé publique France Barometer, a survey conducted on a random sample of the population residing in France. The analysis focuses on the 4,733 daily smokers aged 18 to 75 interviewed in mainland France. Multivariate logistic regressions were performed, including socioeconomic covariates, alcohol consumption, and the occurrence of a characterized depressive episode in the previous year. Results – Among daily smokers, 59.3% reported wanting to quit smoking, 26.4% reported planning to quit within the next six months, and 30.3% had made an attempt to quit for at least one week in the past 12 months. The desire to quit smoking was associated with being male, being over 35 years of age, reporting financial hardship, and having experienced a major depressive episode within the past year. Plans to quit within six months were associated with a level of education higher than a high school diploma, a financial situation perceived as difficult, and the occurrence of a major depressive episode. Attempts to quit within the year were associated with being male, being under 35 years of age, and having a high school diploma or higher. Alcohol consumption (daily use or significant monthly binge drinking) was negatively associated with the three variables of interest.
