Outbreak of hemolytic uremic syndrome and bloody diarrhea caused by Escherichia coli O104:H4 in southwestern France, June 2011

As of June 28, 2011, 15 cases of hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS) or bloody diarrhea had been reported in Gironde since June 22, 2011. Investigations suggest that sprouted seeds served during an open house at a recreation center in Bègles on June 8, 2011, were the source of transmission. An epidemic strain of Shiga toxin 2-producing Escherichia coli O104:H4 was isolated from 5 cases. This strain is genetically related to the strain identified in the recent E. coli O104:H4 outbreak in Germany and exhibits the same characteristics of virulence and antibiotic resistance. (R.A.)
