Summary

In Week 08 (February 22–28, 2021), emergency department visits remained stable across all age groups (+0.8%, or +2,413 visits), while hospitalizations following visits decreased slightly by 3% (or -1,840 hospitalizations).

In Week 08, after one week of stabilization, visits for suspected COVID-19 across all age groups increased (+8%, or +549 visits), as did their share of total activity (7,466 visits and a 2.9% share of activity in Week 08 vs. 6,917 visits and 2.7% in Week 07). This increase is primarily driven by those aged 15–74 (+12%, or +589 visits). Among children, there was a slight increase with low numbers (+7%, or +7 visits), while among those aged 75 and older, visits were down slightly (-2%, or -47 visits). Suspected COVID-19 is the fifth most common diagnosis among those aged 15–74 and the third most common among those aged 75 and older. The proportion of hospitalizations following a visit across all age groups remains stable at 56% (vs. 58% in S07). At the regional level, visits for suspected COVID-19 are on the rise in Île-de-France (+32%, or +492 visits), Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes (+8%, or +64 visits), Normandy (+35%, or +54 visits), Nouvelle-Aquitaine (+15%, or +52 visits), Pays-de-la-Loire (+16%, or +35 visits), and Corsica (+63%, or +15 visits). An increase in visits is also observed in Guadeloupe (11 vs. 0 visits in S07), French Guiana (11 vs. 2 visits in S07), and Réunion (60 vs. 53 visits in S07). Since monitoring began on February 24, 2020, 379,722 emergency room visits for suspected COVID-19 have been recorded.

Among seasonal illnesses, most indicators are stable or declining, except for visits due to bronchiolitis, which are rising among children under 2 years of age (+7%, or +121 visits) to a level higher than in previous years.
