Summary

During the first week of 2015 (December 29 to January 4), a significant increase in mortality was observed in civil registry offices (Figures 1 and 2). However, this trend remains within the usual seasonal pattern, and the numbers across all age groups are comparable to those of previous years. The increase in mortality is observed primarily among people aged 85 and older (Figure 3). It is seen in the regions of Alsace, Champagne-Ardenne, Burgundy, Lower Normandy, Poitou-Charentes, PACA, Languedoc-Roussillon, and to a lesser extent in the regions of Upper Normandy, Nord-Pas-de-Calais, Lorraine, and Rhône-Alpes. Electronically certified deaths have also risen sharply since the beginning of 2015, with 734 deaths in week 1 and 790 deaths in week 2.
