Health Surveillance of Mortality. Weekly Update for August 9, 2022

Key Points

  • Nationally, the number of deaths among people aged 65 and older, based on civil registry data (INSEE), showed a significant excess in weeks 27 through 29 and appears to have returned to within the usual range of fluctuation in week 30 (to be confirmed once the data is consolidated).

  • The rise in mortality began mainly in Occitanie and Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur in week 27, spreading to a large part of mainland France. The excesses were more pronounced on the western coast in week 28 and in the east in week 29.

  • The rise in mortality coincides with the heatwave and high temperatures that have affected mainland France since July 13.
