Health Surveillance of Mortality. Weekly Update, August 31, 2021

Key Points

  • At the national level, a moderate excess of all-cause deaths was observed in week 29 (July 19–25) and week 32 (August 9–15, 2021), affecting more specifically adults aged 65–84. Nationwide figures appear to be returning to their usual range of fluctuation in Week 33 (August 16–22).

  • In mainland France, a moderate excess of all-cause deaths was observed in Bourgogne-Franche-Comté, Grand-Est, Brittany, Occitanie, and Centre-Val-de-Loire in week 32, in Corsica in weeks 31 and 32, and in PACA in weeks 29, 30, 32, and 33.

  • In the overseas territories, the number of deaths is significantly higher than usual in Martinique between weeks 30 and 33 (with a decline that appears to be beginning in week 33) and in Guadeloupe between weeks 31 and 33. Based on electronic death certificates, the increase in the number of deaths in Guadeloupe continues in S34, while in Martinique, the number of electronic certificates appears to be decreasing in S34 but remains at a high level.
