Suicidal Thoughts and Reported Suicide Attempts (Public Health France Barometer 2024 – Ages 18–79)
In 2024, among the general population, the prevalence of suicidal thoughts in the past 12 months among those aged 18–79 was estimated at 5.2%. It was 5.4% for reported suicide attempts in the lifetime and 0.4% for reported suicide attempts in the past 12 months.
Emergency department visits for self-harm (OSCOUR® 2024 – all ages)
Stability in the proportion of emergency department visits due to self-harm across all of France (excluding PACA and Corsica) in 2024, with 4.5 visits per 1,000 people (-1% compared to 2023), corresponding to 77,041 emergency department visits due to self-harm.
Hospitalizations for self-harm (SNDS PMSI-MCO 2024 – all ages)
A slight increase in the number of hospitalizations for self-harm in 2024, with 97,302 hospitalizations recorded, representing a standardized rate of 142 hospitalizations per 100,000 inhabitants (+6% compared to 2023).
Hospitalization rates continued to rise among girls and young women aged 11–24, with 674 hospitalizations per 100,000 women aged 11–17 and 424 hospitalizations per 100,000 women aged 18–24—rates significantly higher than those in other age groups.
Drug overdose was the cause of hospitalization in 77% of cases and was the most common cause regardless of gender.
Deaths by suicide (SNDS CépiDc 2023 – all ages)
The number of suicide deaths remained stable in 2023, with 8,848 deaths recorded, corresponding to a standardized rate of 13 deaths per 100,000 inhabitants (-4% compared to 2022).
The highest suicide death rates were among men aged 65 and older and those aged 45–64, with 37 and 29 deaths per 100,000 men, respectively.
The most frequently recorded method of suicide on death certificates was hanging (51%), regardless of gender.
2024 Activities of the 3114 and VigilanS Prevention Programs
From June to December 2024, 3114, the national suicide prevention hotline, received 215,093 calls.
In 2024, 41,777 people were enrolled in the follow-up and monitoring program.
