On August 4, 1995, the National Reference Center (NRC) for Salmonella and Shigella reported to the Directorate General of Health that the number of human isolates of Salmonella serotype Hadar had doubled compared to the number of isolates recorded during the same months of the previous year. On August 7, the National Public Health Network (RNSP) launched an investigation into this national outbreak to determine the causes and extent of this increase. The results of this investigation strongly suggest that the consumption of undercooked poultry or pre-roasted poultry is responsible for this summer surge in Salmonella serotype Hadar.
