Measles Epidemiological Bulletin. Surveillance data as of June 26, 2019

Key Points

  • Since January 1, 2019, 1,848 cases of measles have been reported (compared to 2,530 cases during the same period in 2018), of which 539 (29%) were hospitalized (25 in intensive care), 131 cases (7%) complicated by pneumonia, and 2 cases of encephalitis, including 1 death (subacute encephalitis in an immunocompromised patient).

  • The circulation of the measles virus has intensified, with 121 cases (on average) during weeks S18 to S24, compared to 76 cases (on average) during the previous 8 weeks.

  • 86 departments reported at least 1 case during the period.

  • 89% of cases occurred in unvaccinated or inadequately vaccinated individuals (out of a total of 1,296 cases, aged over one year and born since 1980, for whom vaccination status was known).

  • The occurrence of nosocomial cluster cases underscores the importance of updating vaccination status among healthcare workers.
