Measles Epidemiological Bulletin. Surveillance data as of June 19, 2019

Key Points

  • Since January 1, 2019, 1,697 cases of measles have been reported (vs. 2,493 cases during the same period in 2018), including 501 (29%) hospitalizations (22 in intensive care), 123 cases (7%) complicated by pneumonia, 2 cases of encephalitis, including 1 death (subacute encephalitis in an immunocompromised patient).

  • The circulation of the measles virus has intensified, with 115 cases (on average) during weeks S18 through S23, compared to 75 cases (on average) during the previous 8 weeks.

  • 82 departments reported at least 1 case during the period.

  • 87% of cases occurred in unvaccinated or inadequately vaccinated individuals (out of a total of 1,198 cases, aged over one year and born since 1980, for whom vaccination status was known).

  • The occurrence of nosocomial cluster cases underscores the importance of updating vaccination status among healthcare workers.
